Protecting the Night Sky in the Columbia Gorge
Columbia Gorge Discovery Center presents “Protecting the Night Sky in the Columbia Gorge” with Bob Yoesle, Friday, Sept. 27, 2019. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7:00 p.m. at Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, 5000 Discovery Drive, in The Dalles. A night sky telescope viewing will be held outdoors after the program.
Astronomer Bob Yoesle, with Dark Sky Defenders and the Rose City Astronomers, will make you rethink your outdoor night lighting choices. Why is that important? About 80% of American’s live under light polluted skies, and the rate of artificial light at night is growing. What is lost when humans and fellow creatures lose sight of the stars and bypass a natural cycle of darkness? How does this impact the wildlife and our quality of life in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area? Come learn more about this issue and what you can do to preserve dark skies.
Display boards show you what Good Neighbor Lighting principles are and the efforts being made by gorge communities in the Columbia Gorge to achieve a Dark Sky Community status.
There will be a nighttime telescope observation event after the presentation (weather and clouds permitting), led by members of the Rose City Astronomers.
The dinner menu includes salmon with lentils and panzanella salad.
Ticket prices for the dinner and presentation are $18. The presentation only is just $5. For more information, phone (541) 296-8600 x 201, or visit www.gorgediscovery.org.
